We stocked up on food, water, gasolina, downloaded maps, and alpaca blankets, and went off the grid for 3 days into the Bolivian/Chilean desert along the infamous ‘ruta de las lagunas’ (lagoon route). . The infamous Lagunas route is almost 500 kilometers of red desert sand, white snow-capped volcanos, and colored lagoons referred to as the “jewels of the desert.” . We can both honestly say that those days through the desert have been the number1 HIGHLIGHT of our South America journey so far, but it has also been the most difficult part of our journey. . Extreme winds, freezing nights, high altitude, and rough road conditions made this journey such a challenge. But the desert was filled with unimaginable and extraordinary beauty.
